SeniorGuardCare works completely without AI. Every core feature - medications, documents, the SOS card, care team coordination - works with zero AI involvement. If you choose to enable AI, this page explains exactly what that means.
Two clear modes
We built SeniorGuardCare so it works perfectly either way. You are never nudged, upsold, or pressured into enabling AI.
Without AI (default)
No AI system ever accesses your data
This is how all new accounts start. No action needed.
With AI (opt-in)
Additional features, limited and purposeful data sharing
Requires explicit consent. Enable and disable in Settings at any time.
Full transparency
Every AI feature below lists precisely what data leaves our servers, when, and under what conditions. Nothing is vague.
Medication label scanner
Point your camera at a prescription label. AI reads the medication name, dosage, and instructions and pre-fills the form.
Data sent to AI
The label image only. No patient name, no medical history, no account information.
Triggered when
Only when you tap "Scan label" on the medication form.
Monthly care summary
A plain-English summary of the last 30 days: medications given, wellness trends, appointments attended, and anything that stands out.
Data sent to AI
Medication names and dosages, wellness log scores (mood and pain numbers), appointment titles and dates. All real patient names are replaced with anonymous tokens before sending.
Triggered when
Only when you tap "Generate summary" on the Monthly Summary page.
Doctor's visit briefing
A concise clinical briefing you can bring to a GP, specialist, or hospital appointment. Covers current medications, diagnoses, recent wellness notes, and questions to ask.
Data sent to AI
Medications, diagnoses and conditions, recent appointment notes, and recent wellness entries. Patient names replaced with tokens.
Triggered when
Only when you tap "Generate briefing" on the Doctor's Summary page.
AI care assistant
Ask questions about medications, care routines, or wellness. The assistant answers using the context you choose to share.
Data sent to AI
Your typed question, plus any context you explicitly choose to include: the medication list, wellness log, or appointment titles. You control what gets shared each time. Names are anonymized.
Triggered when
Only when you send a message in the AI Assistant chat.
Care handover report
A structured briefing for a new carer, nurse, or hospital ward. Covers current medications, recent visit notes, outstanding tasks, and care preferences.
Data sent to AI
Medications, recent care notes, visit records, and outstanding tasks. Names replaced with anonymous tokens.
Triggered when
Only when you tap "Generate handover" on the Handover Report page.
Wellness insights
Notices patterns in mood and pain scores over time and highlights anything that may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
Data sent to AI
Mood and pain scores with dates. No medication names, no diagnoses, no identifying information.
Triggered when
Only when you tap "Analyse" on the Wellness page.
Data protection
Even when you choose to enable AI, we apply multiple layers of protection before any data leaves our systems.
Zero access by default
No AI system ever touches your data unless you have explicitly opted in AND actively trigger a feature. Enabling AI does not start any background processing. Every call is on-demand.
Names replaced before sending
Before any data leaves our servers, real patient names, doctor names, and identifiers are replaced with anonymous tokens like [PATIENT] or [DR_A]. The AI never sees real names.
Encrypted in transit
All data sent to and from the AI provider travels over TLS 1.3 encrypted connections. It cannot be read in transit.
Not used for AI training
We use OpenAI's API under a zero-retention data processing agreement. OpenAI does not use API data to train or improve its models. Your health data is not contributing to any AI training dataset.
Instant off switch
Withdrawing consent in Settings immediately stops all future AI calls. No data is deleted from our database - we just stop sending it. You can re-enable at any time.
Access control
Individual users
Every user controls their own AI opt-in from Settings. Enabling AI for your account does not affect other members of your care team.
Care facilities and managers
Account owners and facility managers can enable or disable AI features for all staff and residents on their account. Individual users cannot override this. This gives care organisations complete governance.
Always reversible
Anyone who has enabled AI can disable it instantly from Settings. Consent is withdrawn immediately, no future AI calls will be made. No data is deleted from our systems.
Legal basis
GDPR Article 9 - Special category data
Health data is classified as 'special category' data under GDPR, which carries the highest level of protection. We are legally required to obtain your explicit consent before processing it with a third-party AI provider. We collect this consent before the first use of any AI feature, record the exact timestamp, and you can withdraw it at any time.
Zero-retention agreement with OpenAI
We use OpenAI's API under their enterprise data processing terms. OpenAI does not store API data beyond processing the immediate request, does not use it to train AI models, and does not share it with third parties. This is a legally binding contractual obligation, not just a policy statement.
Data minimisation principle
Each AI feature only sends the minimum data required for that specific task. The label scanner sends an image. The monthly summary sends scores and medication names. The assistant only sends what you choose. We do not send your full account data or medical history to any AI system.
Not medical advice
AI-generated content in SeniorGuardCare is designed to organise and summarise information you already hold, not to provide medical diagnosis or clinical recommendations. Every AI output includes a disclaimer. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making care decisions.
Common questions
Does AI run in the background on my account?
No. AI features are strictly on-demand. Nothing is processed automatically in the background based on your data, even if you have enabled AI features. Every AI call is triggered by you, manually, when you use a specific feature.
What is OpenAI and do they store my data?
OpenAI is the company behind the AI models we use (the same company behind ChatGPT, though we use their API, not ChatGPT itself). Under OpenAI's API terms, data submitted through the API is not stored after processing and is not used to train models. This is different from consumer ChatGPT, where conversations may be used for training.
Can my care facility or employer turn off AI for everyone?
Yes. Account owners and facility managers can restrict AI features for all staff and residents on their account. Individual users cannot enable AI if the account owner has disabled it at the facility level. This gives care organisations full governance over AI use.
What happens to my data if I disable AI?
Nothing is deleted. Your medications, wellness logs, documents, and all other data stay exactly where they are in our database. Disabling AI simply means we stop making any AI API calls for your account. You can re-enable at any time with no data loss.
Is this GDPR compliant?
Yes. Health data is classified as special category data under GDPR Article 9. We collect your explicit, informed consent before any health data is sent to a third-party AI provider. Your consent is timestamped and stored. You can withdraw it at any time, and we maintain a full audit trail.
Does the AI give medical advice?
No. AI features in SeniorGuardCare are designed to summarise and organise information you already have, not to diagnose conditions or replace clinical judgment. Any AI-generated content should be reviewed by a qualified healthcare professional before acting on it. We include this disclaimer on every AI-generated output.
Can I use SeniorGuardCare without ever enabling AI?
Absolutely. Every core feature works without AI: medications, documents, the SOS card, care team coordination, task management, the MAR, visit notes, risk assessments, and more. AI is genuinely optional. Most users will never need it.
